Fall Planting for Spring Success

by Janet Johnson

Cooler air and soil temperatures reduce stress on plants and encourage root growth. Larger root systems assure healthy plants for spring. Spring and summer blooming plants will have more robust blooms and thrive when their time to show off comes around if they have a head start this fall.

Last fall I planted lavender, rosa rugosa, hydrangea, lilies, willow, Russian Sage, butterfly bush and more, all from Country Gardens. They started spring out as very healthy strong plants and thrived! Our neighbor got a honey bee hive, and ohhh…. the floral honey he will get from these flowers! They love they butterfly bush most of all. Below are photos of the plants I put in last fall.

Some favorites for Heber Valley include, coneflower, bee balm, elderberry, Russian Sage, and Creeping Jenny. This is the perfect time to get ornamental grasses established as well. It is certainly more fun to be out gardening in the cooler weather for us humans too! Country Gardens has a great selection of plants available now. Stop on in and get planting in this awesome late summer weather!
