Midsummer Garden Care
Reminders To Create A Robust Harvest And Pretty Plants!
Weed- this is a good time of the year to get those last weed from the spring germination. Once they are gone, the long hot days of July and August usually keep more weeds from germinating. Catch them before they go to seed and create a much bigger problem!
Soil Amendment- Mid-summer is an ideal time to amend your soil to improve its quality and provide nutrients for your plants. Adding organic matter such as compost or well-rotted manure can help improve soil structure, water retention, and nutrient levels. Mix the amendment into the top few inches of soil, being careful not to disturb plant roots. Remember to water the area thoroughly after amending the soil to help incorporate the materials and support microbial activity. CGN carries a great variety of products to use.
Fertilizing- Summer heat makes plants grow faster, so they need more nutrients. Fertilize them regularly with balanced fertilizer containing nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Follow package instructions, usually every 4-6 weeks. Water plants well after fertilizing to spread the nutrients in the soil. Avoid over-fertilizing to prevent harm. Consistent summer fertilization promotes healthy growth and beautiful blooming. Pay extra attention to your annual flowers and vegetables, since you won’t get another chance to support them once the frost hits. :) Right now our fertilizer is 15% off!
Fall Harvest- Planting seeds for the fall harvest assumes we will not have a frost until late October or November. Begin by selecting cold-hardy vegetable and herb seeds such as lettuce, kale, radishes, peas, and spinach. These crops thrive once the cooler temperatures come in late August and can withstand light frosts. Once you sow your seeds keep them wet until they germinate and get their second set of leaves. With proper care, you can enjoy a bountiful fall harvest from your garden.
