Why Plant Parenthood is so Good!

For The Love of House Plants! by Janet Johnson

While there is so much information on studies of the benefits of houseplants, I really don’t need the studies to know they just make me happy! Some of my houseplants are over 30 years old. I have plants that have been passed down from 3 generations of friends. I once went to Home Depot the day after Christmas and was horrified to see some darling 24 inch Norfolk Pine trees spray painted green and splattered with glitter. No plant can survive that abuse. I immediately purchased all 7 trees that were left in their stock for 1 cents each so I could offer them a safe and happy home. The trees grew over 7 feet tall in the next 10 years and I gifted them to some friends with tall ceilings and green thumbs. I once started a tropical vine and ran it along the ceiling of our family room. It got huge orange blooms and was very exotic for living in Midway. Ultimately I had to cut it back as it had begun take over the room.

My houseplants soften the rooms in my house, adding a touch of nature and coziness. They are an inexpensive way to add charm and beauty to your decor.

Each of my house plants have a special story, and each I adore for their quirky characteristics and the joy they bring to me.

If you are curious about the benefits of house plants, here are some of the things I have learned from studies about how they provide numerous benefits for your well-being. Incorporating house plants into your living space can have a positive impact on your health in several ways:

  1. Air purification: House plants are natural air purifiers, absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen through the process of photosynthesis. They also help to remove toxins such as formaldehyde, benzene, and ammonia from the air, creating a cleaner and healthier indoor environment.

  2. Stress reduction: Studies have shown that being around plants can help reduce stress, anxiety, and fatigue. The presence of greenery indoors can promote a sense of calmness and relaxation, which is beneficial for both mental and emotional well-being.

  3. Improved indoor climate: House plants can help regulate humidity levels in your home, creating a more comfortable atmosphere, especially during the dry winter months. They can also act as natural air humidifiers, reducing the risk of respiratory issues and dry skin.

  4. Boosted mood and productivity: Research has demonstrated that being around plants can elevate mood, increase productivity, and enhance concentration. Having house plants in your working or living space can uplift your spirits and create a more vibrant and stimulating environment.

  5. Better sleep: Some house plants, such as lavender and jasmine, are known for their calming and sleep-inducing properties. Placing these plants in your bedroom can help you relax and improve the quality of your sleep.

Incorporating house plants into your home not only adds a touch of nature and beauty but also contributes to your overall health and well-being.
